So many things had led up to the place where she was right now, staring at her phone and slowly scrolling through the comments on Facebook to her ex-boyfriend's relationship status change. People she'd never even spoken to before were weighing in on the break-up and of course everyone was believing the story that he'd told over hers. Why wouldn’t they though? Apparently none of the people she’d considered to be her friends had actually been her friends. They’d only stuck around because she was dating the captain of the soccer team or because she was popular and pretty and a cheerleader. The second any of that was put in question, she was nothing.

“I mean it’s not like I define myself by who I’m dating but…” Alice sighed and closed out facebook as her dark gaze skittered over a less than favorable comment about her morals. The most ironic thing about this whole situation? While she was painted a whore, she’d done little more than making out and the occasional fondling above the waist. In short, she was a virgin being crucified by her peers for supposedly cheating on the perfect, popular and definitely gorgeous captain of the soccer team.

The asshole had certainly played his part, pretending to be wounded by her supposedly callous treatment. Telling tales about how he’d been cruelly dumped by the beautiful but faithless wench. Of course that had lasted all of a week or two before he’d decided that he had to be strong and move on. Well, the rest of the school had moved right along with him and shut her out. Finishing out the year on the cheerleading squad had been an awkward mess, even a little dangerous. As a flyer she had to trust that she would be caught. By the end of the year, she wasn’t even sure that she trusted any of the others to carry her backpack, let alone catch her after tossing her into the air.

Switching to her amazon music account, Alice flicked through until she found a suitably intense music station and slid her phone into the arm band. Lifting her casted left hand, she sighed as she eyed the only two names on there. Her step-sibling and her little brother. A little over a month ago, her cast would’ve been entirely covered with signatures and doodles. Now the black plaster was all but pristine. Shaking her head, Alice pulled her bluetooth headphones over her ears and took off at a sedate jog.

The leisurely pace didn’t last long though, she needed to burn off some steam and push the feelings of betrayal and anger and hopelessness from her mind. All her life her mother had been pushing and prodding her toward this pinnacle of popularity only to have the platform she’d been standing on completely crumble beneath her due to some particularly vicious rumors. It wasn’t fair! In fact she wasn’t even sure some of the things that people were accusing her of were legal. Even her own mother seemed to be buying into the hype which only made things worse as there were now daily lectures about how she’d thrown everything away, and who was this other boy that was worth losing the captain of the soccer team?

“Well at least I don’t have to laugh at any of his basic ass jokes anymore.” Alice grumbled before cutting sharply to the left to cut down a few blocks. She wasn’t really sure where she was headed or even how far or long she would run but she just needed the physical outlet.

Caleb was at the dentist, Justine was at her friend's house, Bianca and Tristan were at their summer school program, leaving Tyler and Becca to be at home with mom. Okay, that was everyone. Everyone was occupied for the time being. Finally.

Cameron parked his Toyota in the driveway, pocketing the keys as he lifted himself out of the sedan. By habit, he automatically half-crawled back into the car to grab the various fast food wrappers from the passenger seat and unlocked the rest of the vehicle to grab the last of the bags from the back. Such was his life.

Most 17-year-olds were probably out enjoying the time off school. It was a vacation from the constant work and a chance to catch up on or flat-out reject sleep as a whole. For Cameron, this was far from the truth. As usual, Cameron would be waking up every weekday morning to take the middle kids to school, the angsty-brat-teen would try to lag behind despite having to do something and then drive the eldest girl around while he tried running errands. Today just happened to be a day where he had a decent gap where Cameron could take a breather from it all.

Just as the boy was taking the wads of crumpled bags and wrappers, he noticed a familiar face running through the block. Alice looked....not happy. That wasn't good.

The talk of the school was not being kind to his cousin. It wasn't too long ago that she was being accused of being the school whore. It was a mess. Between half the freaking soccer team asking if he wanted to join in on the rumor (which, uh, no. For many reasons.) and then the captain of said team being the root of all evil, Cameron had to leave. What he was going to do instead was still up in the air but there was no way he was going to pretend everything was fine with how Alice was being treated.

So, were things carrying onto the summer? This was insane. Honestly, it was infuriating, learning about the cheerleading 'accident.' But...what could Cameron do except support her? It was horrible to feel so powerless to help. As the girl approached, Cam stepped out to the side of the concrete and waved her down. "Hey!" he greeted, raising his voice slightly to catch her attention over the earbuds, a friendly smile plastered on his face. "Want a running buddy?"

Alice wasn’t too far into her run when she spotted Cameron step out into the street and flag her down. Slowing her all out run to a jog and then further to a standstill, she reached over and paused the Linkin Park that was blaring her ear buds. Alice still felt a little bad that Cameron had quit soccer because of what had happened to her but she couldn’t say that she wasn’t also extremely grateful that he’d made such a display of solidarity. Managing a smile for her cousin, she itched the back of her arm and shrugged.

”I mean if you want. Just trying to blow off some steam. What are you up to?” Managing a smile for her cousin, anyone who knew her like he did would be able to tell that she was troubled. How could she not be with all that had happened over the past few weeks. It was strange how much it hurt to have your life crumble around you, even when it wasn’t a life you particularly wanted.

"You look like you could use a rant. Unless you really want some alone time," Cameron gave a small, reassuring smile despite worried eyebrows pulling together on his forehead. "Me? I just got through dumping the brood off around Angel Grove, basically testing the fates once again, and I was just going to binge watch some outdated sitcom. So, really, not much," Cam gave a large sigh. He had to admit, though, it was a very productive day. Still, he would give up a few hours of lazing without hesitation if his cousin needed someone.

It wasn't like Alice could talk to her mom. Cameron loved his aunt and he knew that Alice loved her mom. But Cam knew full well that his aunt could a little hard to see eye to eye with. Especially with her daughter. Because who really wanted to date Chaz longterm? Alice...would have had to have had some kind of influence to keep it up, right? Then things blew up and last Girl's Night, Cameron could hear his aunt and his mom debating the worthiness of Chaz.

Cameron's former team captain was definitely talented but he was also a world-class tool. Straight up demented after what he pulled on Alice. It really wasn't painful for Cameron to quit.
