“Why don’t you take the dog for a walk?” Dr. Flynn suggested, his voice carrying into the front hall from the kitchen.

Hayden paused and looked up from her half-crouched position with a less than amused expression, hand holding firm to the blue nylon collar of the excited Irish setter, but her father’s back was turned, and the man was busying himself with a dozen or so bags groceries. That would explain the poorly timed comment, at least, but Hayden wasn’t exactly in an accepting mood this morning. Without a word, she finished clipping the leash on the dancing red dog and left through the front door.

Sunny, hot California… Today, back in her hometown of Pomfret, Connecticut, noon, it was a mild sixty-seven degrees, overcast, and drizzly. But, here in Angel Grove, California, at nine o’clock in the morning, the sun was blazing, and Hayden was making a best guess that it was already in the mid-eighties. She didn’t know for sure, and she supposed it probably would have been prudent to switch her phone over to her new location, but…she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Denial—she knew she was in deep, but knowing it didn’t change anything. She still didn’t want to be there, three-thousand miles away from home and her friends and everything else she knew and loved.

Hayden ambled down the short, paved driveway of the enormous suburban house, hazel eyes giving an uninterested glance around the neatly manicured front lawn through the rosy tint of her sunglasses. Cliff walked on a slack leash at her side, his prancing gait zig-zagging a bit, following his head with the overactive sniffer panning the new neighborhood. Excited as he was with his lolling tongue and waving tail, he kept himself faithfully glued to his girl’s side, his big brown eyes glancing up to her now and then as if to say, “What an adventure we’re having!” He was thrilled, but, then again, he was likely unaware of the unfortunate factors which brought them to this exciting new place. He felt his girl’s misery, though, and it manifested in the occasional questioning whine mixing through his steady, easy panting breath.

Pausing as she reached the sidewalk, Hayden reached up to tie her long, copper waves back in a high ponytail with an elastic she’d worn on her wrist, letting the leash hang loose on its loop around her forearm. Cliff took the moment to give the flowers at the edge of driveway a thorough investigation with his nose, patient as only the best good boy in the world could be for his girl to do her thing. Once her hair was secured up, Hayden stepped off to the left, her tall, red dog falling in step at her side with a high waving tail. Neither had a clue where they were going, and, while Hayden didn’t particularly care with her sullen mood and stubborn denial, Cliff looked genuinely thrilled to be doing anything at all with his girl in this excitingly new place.

NOTE: Hayden just moved into what is probably the nicest house in that part of town. Completely new to Angel Grove, this is her first day, and she is not thrilled to be here.

The California sun beat down on his body as he jogged through the suburbs. He was only a little over a mile and a half into his run and the sweat was already pouring down his body. The saddest part of it all was the mere fact that it was barely 9 o’clock in the morning. He had never lived anywhere but California his entire life. One would think he would have been completely adapted to the heat by now. Unfortunately, Ryan Reese had come to the conclusion that a person could never totally get used to this. He was just grateful for the times when his runs weren’t made miserable by the stuffy football gear he was used to wearing.

His father expected him to go out running every day, even if he had football practice. Actually, the only days he was able to escape a morning run were game days. Ryan was just lucky his father had an early morning meeting and hadn’t been around to force him out of bed to go running at the crack of dawn. He’d actually been able to sleep in a bit, though with how hot it was he was regretting that decision. Maybe his father wasn’t so crazy for making him go out running early in the morning…

Still, despite how much he complained about it, he didn’t mind it much. It was good to keep himself in top, physical condition. That was how he was going to get scholarships to the best schools in the country - such was the lecture his father gave him any time he complained about it. The coach had a point though. Besides that, Ryan enjoyed being able to just be left alone with his thoughts for a little while. It always helped to clear his head - yes, even he needed that once in awhile. Believe it or not, the pressure of being Ryan Reese, star receiver on the high school football team did get to him every now and again. He could thank the coach for that. Anyone who told him how cool it was that his dad was such a good coach and how lucky he was to be the son of the once-great football player hadn’t ever tried living with him.

He gave a shake of his head. These were the kinds of things he tried not to think about during his runs. The football player slowed his pace down to a walk, taking a drink from his water bottle and dumping some of the cool liquid down his torso. He was several blocks away from his house now and he was trying to determine if he should keep going or be lazy and head back - his father would never know the better.

It was during this internal battle that Ryan suddenly noticed he wasn’t alone on the street. No more than about ten feet away, headed right towards him, was a red dog. Even more exciting was the red-haired girl walking with the dog. She looked to be around his age but Ryan couldn’t ever recall seeing her around before - and he paid pretty close attention to the female population of Angel Grove. He would have remembered seeing a beautiful face likes hers before.

As the pair got closer, Ryan took a few steps towards them, stretching his hand out towards the dog for him to sniff once he was in reach. ”Hey there buddy! I haven’t ever seen you around here before,” he greeted the dog. He then raised his gaze to look at the girl, giving her a charming smile. ”Or you, for that matter and I probably run through this neighborhood every day. Are you new to town? Just visiting family perhaps? “ he asked. ”I’m Ryan, by the way. Ryan Reese,” he introduced.

Hayden had made it five steps from her driveway before a bell-like tone had her halting at just about mid-step. Coming to a short stop, the redhead reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone with an urgency—an urgency that Cliff missed entirely, and the tall, red dog found the end of his leash with a sudden tension that had him stopping and returning to his girl’s hip with a great deal of confusion.

Finally! A text message! The outside world—her world—had finally made contact. Hayden’s usual brightness lit her features for the first time since she had crossed the Connecticut state border for the last time, and she tapped on the notification with great anticipation. It was Arianna, her best friend, and…

“Not much. Been raining.”

The redhead’s brow crinkled in a bit of disappointment. Hayden had told Arianna she missed her and asked what she’d been up to; that was two days and, like, a thousand miles ago… Of course, Hayden figured the time gap had something to do with Arianna being busy setting up the beach house in Newport—beginning of summer and all that jazz—but… That wasn’t the kind of text she had expected from her best friend. It was kind of…cold? Or apathetic. Nowhere close to her usual long-winded, dramatic walls of text. And how, exactly, was Hayden expected to follow up? Or was she expected to? There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding those four words on her screen, but she didn’t exactly have the time to brood about it, either.

A sudden jerk on the leash had the girl’s head snapping up, her feet shuffling forward so she didn’t lose her balance. Cliff stood at high alert at the end of the nylon lead, his head and tail lifted and eyes trained forward with intense focus, and, with the slightest bit of slack given to the leash, the setter began leading his girl forward with a bouncing step. Following the dog’s fixed gaze as she picked back up in a walk, Hayden saw the source of the disturbance: a jogger—a boy somewhere around her age coming right toward them. He slowed his pace, taking a swig from his water bottle and emptying a good portion of the contents on his person, and Hayden…gently pulled Cliff as far over toward the road as she could without actually stepping off the sidewalk, her eyes casting deliberately forward the moment she noticed the boy looking straight at her.

As the gap closed, Hayden kept a steady tension on the leash to keep Cliff close to her side, but the jogger veered closer, and Cliff stretched out his neck to inspect the offered hand. Hayden gave the gesture a sharp look, wondering to herself who just shoved their hand at a dog they didn’t know without at least saying something, anything, to the owner first. Lucky for this guy, Cliff was about as vicious as a red shag carpet, and the worst the stranger received was a good deal of slobber as the dog’s jowls swiped back and forth over the outstretched hand with fervor.

Hayden’s gaze lifted to the boy’s face as he issued his greeting to Cliff, an unhidden disapproval narrowing her brow and subtly pursing her lips. Even as he looked to her with what was clearly intended to be a charming smile and finally acknowledge her, the owner, Hayden’s expression was resolutely uncomfortable. “We just moved here,” she responded flatly, pulling gently on Cliff’s leash to back him away from the stranger, “So, no, I wouldn’t imagine you’ve seen us before.” Cliff reluctantly disengaged and fixed his girl with sad, pleading eyes, but his girl just reached down and gave his head a good rub which had him responding with a very pleased wave of his tail.

“Anyway, you look like you have places to go, so…” Hayden turned her gaze back down the road and gave Cliff’s leash a couple of light tugs to get his attention. “Have a nice day.” Stepping just off the sidewalk, the girl made to skirt around the jogger, her shaggy, red dog just a beat behind her movements, still distracted by what a dog could only assume was his new friend.

What could he say? He liked dogs. Most people did. He’d never had any bad encounters with a dog and, as a result, had never been afraid to approach them. Okay, there was that one, yippie Chihuahua over on Oak St. that always chased him and bit at his ankles when he was out running but…it wasn’t that scary. Ryan could probably punt it over to the next block if he really wanted to. He didn’t really hold the behavior against the tiny dog though, he was pretty sure that was just their sole purpose in life was to be a nuisance.

This dog, however, was not an annoying, ankle-biter. In fact, this dog seemed rather happy to see him - judging by the amounts of slobber that now covered Ryan’s hand. Unfortunately, the dog’s owner did not seem nearly as excited to be making a new friend. Even Ryan wasn’t oblivious enough to miss the look of displeasure on the girl’s face. Apparently someone had woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Fortunately, Ryan was not deterred. If anything, he was just now determined to give the redhead something to smile about. Wasn’t he so kind?

He gave a nod of his head as she explained they had just moved here, frowning for a moment as she pulled the dog away from him. ”I guess that would explain it then,” he agreed. Before he could even say much more to her, the girl was suddenly trying to head on her way. While the average person would have taken the hint that she wanted to be left alone, Ryan really wasn’t the type to get hints like that - or rather, he tended to just ignore them. He couldn’t just let this pretty new girl walk away without giving him her name. Here she was trying to be so polite and not impose on his time. Ryan appreciated that, he really did. What she didn’t know, however, was that he had plenty of time to kill today. If anything, it would just make it look like he had been out running longer than he actually had.

”Oh, no worries! I am in no hurry actually. Just out on my morning run but…I have nowhere important to be at the moment,” the football player assured her, jogging forward a bit to catch up with her. ”Besides, I didn’t even get your name. Are you going to be going to Angel Grove High?” he questioned. He assumed she was about his age and, therefore, probably would be. She could already be graduated for all he knew though. Of course, if she kept walking away from him…he really wouldn’t know much about her…

A forced smile found its way to Hayden’s otherwise disinterested expression as the boy, Ryan, agreed with her explanation. She was genuinely unconcerned with explaining herself and her presence to him outside of the obligatory, “I just moved here,” and offered no additional information. That fact—or the lack of facts—didn’t seem to bother the boy much, though, as he simply kept on with that smile. And followed her…

Hayden had thought her dismissal was on a fair blast, but, somehow, this Ryan guy had missed the memo. Instead, the boy was jogging after her, telling her he had nowhere important to be. With a raised brow, Hayden’s step hitched to a halt as Ryan came jogging up beside her, and she turned her head fix him with an expression that simply asked, “Why, though?” Contrary to his girl’s sour reaction, Cliff was perfectly happy to be accompanied by his new friend, his tail waving pleasantly and big brown eyes looking between his girl and his acquaintance, just happy to be going places together.

Ryan hadn’t gotten her name. Astute observation, and a travesty, really—one Hayden was hoping would be overlooked. Oh, well. She’d tried. “Hayden,” she answered unenthusiastically. “And, yeah. I guess. That’s the local public school, right?” She turned her gaze forward and continued down the sidewalk at a steady, brisk pace. Like Ryan, she didn’t have anywhere important to be at the moment, but she could certainly move like she did. Maybe he’d take a hint and give up?

Ah yes, she just moved here. Ryan would have never been able to piece that one together. He refrained from voicing any smart ass comments along those lines to the redhead though. It was starting to become apparent to him that maybe she wasn’t thrilled by his presence…which was weird. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to be in the presence of Ryan Reese? He wasn’t going to hold it against her though. He would just play it off as her being grouchy about being in a new town or something like that. Being the new kid wasn’t easy. Ryan got that, he had been there once.

Finally he was able to get her name from her! Just this alone proved that his persistence was paying off. Clearly she was starting to warm up to him already. Most likely, she would be asking him out on a date before the end of the day. That was fine, Ryan didn’t mind…however, he might have to play hard to get. He had a reputation to uphold. He couldn’t have the new girl letting the world know that Ryan Reese was easy. He was, in fact, totally easy…but that didn’t mean he wanted the world to know that.

”It’s nice to make your acquaintance, Hayden,” he said. He nodded his head in affirmation as she asked if Angel Grove High was the local, public school. ”Yeah, that’s the one. It’s…well, probably pretty similar to any other high school in the country. My mom’s the vice principal over there and my dad is the head football coach. I’m sure you’ll bump into them at some point. They can be a bit much to deal with but they aren’t half bad,” he explained to her.

Did she care about those things? Ryan was guessing she probably didn’t. Again, she really didn’t look thrilled to be talking to him right now. She must just be having a really hard time adjusting to this new place. He wasn’t going to hold it against her. ”Just consider me your official, Angel Grove tour guide. Anything you need or want to know, just ask. I can probably answer any of your questions,” he offered. She would warm up to him eventually. Thankfully, her dog was already on his side - Ryan could tell….

Hayden forced another tight-lipped smile at the boy’s response to her name, not at all inclined to reciprocate the sentiment. It was nothing personal, really. Sure, she wasn’t fond of the way this Ryan guy had shoved his hands in the face of a strange dog—her dog—but you could find that kind of ignorance everywhere in abundance. That was more of a minor annoyance thing—a pet peeve. But the redhead’s problem with him got a little more complicated than minor annoyances. Ryan Reese was…a representation. He was the last detail. California had been a nightmare, and even last night had only felt like one unfortunate stay at a bed and breakfast before hitting the road back home. But now? She was meeting people, telling them she’d just moved here, and getting backstories from strangers. It was real—the nightmare was real, and Ryan Reese was the pinch that finally woke her.

Speaking of backstories, though, even the gloomy dark cloud in Hayden’s mind paused a moment as the boy added to his introduction. Son of the vice principal and head football coach? That…sounded like a singular, personal hell, to be perfectly honest. Or maybe it worked in his favor? He did say they could be a bit much to deal with…

“I hope not,” Hayden replied almost impulsively, sounding thoroughly sincere for the first time in their conversation. “If I’m bumping into the vice principal or the football coach, I’m probably nowhere I want to be.” Most people avoided trips to the principal’s office—vice principal included. Surely, public school had that in common wither her private school background? And…football had never been her scene. Her school didn’t even have a football team.

Whatever momentary disarm had come over the girl faded away at the boy’s offer to be her official Angel Grove tour guide. “I’m fine, thanks,” Hayden replied, a nearly cautious edge finding its way back into her expression. “Today’s not really good for me—us.” Hayden gestured to the setter at her hip who was now just prancing along beside her in oblivious merriment. “This is just the obligatory potty walk, you know? Besides, I’m more of a ‘learn by doing’ person, anyway.”

Excusing him hadn’t worked, so maybe excusing herself would have more success.

Maybe.

Ryan’s brow furrowed in confusion at Hayden’s response to learning who his parents were. He was clearly trying to decide if she was trying to tell a joke or not. Considering she had yet to exhibit anything close to humor…he really wasn’t sure. It’d be kind of rude to start insulting someone you had just met who was kindly offering to help show you around town though. Especially when that person was as good looking and charming as he was. So…it had to be a joke. Maybe she just wasn’t good at jokes?

”I mean that’s not necessarily true. What’s so bad about football, for one thing? As far as the vice principal goes, I mean, yeah I guess that is more likely to be bad but…not always? Most people tend to like my mom, I think,” he explained to her, shrugging his shoulders. His mom was all about being involved with every activity going on at the school. Okay, so she was a little strict but…she wasn’t evil. Most days.

Despite his confusion over determining how serious her comment had been, it had actually seemed like Hayden was warming up to him a little. Probably an emphasis on ‘a little’ but it was still progress. Unfortunately, it seemed to be a short-lived victory. It was like one step forward and six steps back with this girl. Luckily for her, Ryan wasn’t easily deterred. He really was just trying to be friendly. He wasn’t even seriously hitting on her. Not yet. Maybe later on, as she was rather attractive - but right now he really was just trying to be nice.

He nodded his head in understanding, shrugging his shoulders once more. ”Yeah, yeah. I get it. It’s no big deal, I’m sure you’re probably busy getting settled in still and whatnot. I just know that moving to a new town can be rough - we moved here back when I was in middle school and the first couple of days sucked. It’s nice when people are willing to reach out and be friendly. That’s how I met one of my best friends - he actually lives on this street, you might see him sometime…Cameron is his name,” he told her. ”But if you ever change your mind…I’m happy to help out in any way that I can! I’m pretty well-connected now!” he said proudly. At least he could say he tried, right?
