This whole "mission" was useless. Even labeling it a "mission" was dumb. It was an overrated training exercise meant to pacify some new need for normalcy? What a laugh. Zachary scowled at the text message his "cousin" sent. He wanted pictures of him out in town. Yeah, because that was normal.

Alright, so for the past two weeks Zachary had been "going out" by walking exactly half a mile away and reading in the park. It probably would have worked all summer if he hadn't been caught. Zachary was actually looking forward to the shool year starting. It meant there was an actual goal for the day. None of this aimless wandering business. What did people actually do without friends? Or a purpose. What was he supposed to do???

It was so much better hanging out with the other kids at the academy. At least they could relate to his life. They were relevant. Kind of. He really wasn't even that attached to them....Was that really so bad? Whatever.

Zachary had been downtown in the Youth Center. Zach was a youth and needed to at least pretend he was in the center of socializing. But how to do it... While Zach planned his next move, he found himself staring at the bulletin board of community events. Clubs, sports activities, public lessons...Boring. Well, no, there were martial arts classes...Hmm. Would it be totally bad if he found something to do in the activity he actually enjoyed doing? Maybe. The whole point was to take a break from that environment. But, hmm, wait, motocross races? That...that was intriguing. They also had lessons by the same people who owned the track. He needed to get over there. But first...photo for the day.

Well, if they were going to make Zach be weird...he was going to be weird.

Zachary looked around the youth center and saw a pretty good assortment of people. Literally, any one of them would work because he had no intention of interacting with them beyond what he needed. So, upon turning around he saw someone pass him. A girl but it was fine. He literally did not care. Girls liked taking photos anyway, right? "Uh, hi. I'm being forced to make friends and if my cousin doesn't get a picture of me making friends, I am never going to hear the end of it. So we can do one of those selfie things, yeah?" He just laid out the truth for this girl. The best way to get her to know he had no ulterior motives, right?

It seemed the vast majority of students in Angel Grove lived for summer vacation and the endless possibilities that accompanied a three month detour from the monotonous eight to three schedule that was high school. There were elaborate plans involving the beach, the mountains, the quarry, and the sun months before the party was even in full swing – could anyone blame them though? By the sixth month on campus most of them were ready to claws their eyes out if only for an excuse to escape class for half an hour and yet, odd as she was, Analeis could not help but to miss the consistency of a set schedule. It was not to say that she did not love spending time at the beach like everyone else of course, but with her usual hours at the library adjusted to rotating shifts and with her father gone during the day, she was lonely. If she had a group of close friends the young woman supposed that she would be hanging out with them nearly every day, but as one of the few people at school who did not fit into a particular crowd she was stuck.

”You know, I am fairly certain this game of ‘crush my owner’ would be a lot more fun if it wasn’t a million degrees out,” the blonde muttered as she lay sprawled across her bed with a rather large cat perched upon her chest. It seemed the creature hardly cared for the comment her owner made though as she responded with a simple meow of indignation before shifting so she was more tightly curled up exactly where she was before. Analeis swore the cat did this in the middle of summer just to spite her… she was an asshole cat to say the least. The problem of what to do was definitely not solved by the current antics of the feline and the fact that it was nearly a month into summer vacation was not assisting either. It seemed nearly a week ago that the young woman no longer found herself placated with browsing social media or playing video games for hours on end and, again, this game of ‘crush my owner’ was far from entertaining.

There was a moment of complete silence before an inaudible 'fuck it' left her lips, the female unceremoniously rolling the cat off of her chest before crawling out of bed. The cat, still unhappy with this development, made their feelings known as they walked over to the neatly lined pillows at the top of the bed and tossed them around, she settling on one before watching her owner dart about the room to collect a few things. The outfit she wore was exchanged for one sans three layers of cat hair and her purse picked up before a lovely scratch was placed behind the ears of the cat, she telling the ball of fur to behave before dashing out the door in the direction of Downtown Angel Grove.

Her moment of spontaneity could have been better planned given that Analeis forwent the use of her car, but she figured that it could not hurt to waste a few more minutes walking to her unknown destination despite the blistering heat. Besides, she could always stop by the youth center to cool down and see if anything new had been plastered on the bulletin board. It took her approximately twenty minutes to arrive at the large air conditioned building though and when she did her body immediately carried over to the large row of haphazardly placed fliers to learn what she already knew – Spoiler Alert! there was nothing new - , something which resulted in an immediate eye roll as she settled for attempting to straighten out her frizzing hair. Her favorite joy of summer was clearly the obviously amazing frizzy hair and disgusting sweat that her state was famous for.

A soft sigh escaped her pale lips as she turned around and began heading towards the door opposite of where she had entered, her thoughts switching to that of what would be the nicest drink in the blistering heat. Analeis did not get very far though before an unfamiliar face was asking her for a photograph of all things? What in the actual hell? ”You know there are a few different ways you could get a girls’ attention,” she started once the initial shock of his request wore off and her inner ‘are you kidding me’ began to surface. “I’ve found that asking them to coffee is a better way of getting them to agree to go on a date with you or, at the very least, take a ‘selfie thing’.”

In all honesty, Zachary was pretty sure this girl was going to say 'yes' right off the bat. They loved taking pictures. Especially of themselves. It was basically a universal fact. He'd done the social media thing for a good week. It was all the same. But this girl was basically killing his impression of how things worked. She didn't look impressed, let alone like she was going to actually let him take the picture.

With a raised eyebrow, Zach opened his mouth to shoot off a variety of reasons that his 'way' was perfectly fitting for his purpose. But the girl's follow-up kind of had his head feeling like it was simply going to unscrew itself from his shoulders. "A-a date? What?" His words were far from his usual calm demeanor. It certainly deflated his confidence. Why was she wanting to date him? All he wanted was the selfie thing. Also, why was she mocking that? He didn't stutter...Not during the initial request.

After about two seconds of reeling from the shock of dating being mentioned, Zach took a breath. His mouth stopped gaping for a second and he crossed his arms, trying to regain composure. He wasn't going to be beaten. Certainly, it might have been easier to retreat and find someone willing to take the stupid photo with no questions asked. Definitely without asking to go on a date. But now it was a challenge. His ego was at stake. "Okay, fine. Would you like a coffee?" He basically sounded like a child who was being forced to apologize for putting gum in his sister's hair.

The young woman resisted the urge to smirk at his visibly slacking jaw, he clearly searching for a proper response to the snarky comment. It seemed the plan he had concocted prior to asking for a photograph had been destroyed in that moment and, as much as she hated to admit it, Analeis found herself entertained by the look of shock that painted his face. It was a clear indication that his ego had been threatened when she refused to simply go along with his request – honestly though, what did he expect? The popular girls at Angel Grove High School may have been vain, but not even the most self-absorbed cheerleader would have taken a picture with a complete stranger simply because they asked. His lack of finesse was a clear indicator that he had no idea what he was doing when it came to the opposite sex.

After a few seconds of sputtering, the male seemed to pull himself together and, with a quick adjustment to his body language, he followed by asking Analeis out to coffee. It was something which immediately caused her eyebrows to rise if only because she never expected him to act on her… advice of sorts. The tables were suddenly turned and as much as she wanted to silently dissipate into the floor, Analeis refused to appear phased. After all, it was just coffee and she was already questioning where she should stop for a drink given how hot it was. There was a moment of silence as the blonde pursed her lips, she quickly clicking the power button on her phone to view the time slipping the electronic device into her purse. ”I would be happy to go with you.” Those were the words that she finally settled upon, she shifting so her hand was extended towards him despite his sour tone. It seemed he was not exactly happy with the situation, but she figured the worst thing that could come of it was an awkward hour that filled her already uneventful day. ”By the way, I don’t think we’ve met before. My name is Analeis.”

This was going to be interesting.

Zachary's lips pursed, subconsciously mirroring the girl's action and his jaw clenched. Waiting for the girl's response, the boy was suddenly very self-conscious in the least possible way. There was a definite sense of insecurity? Right? That was what it had to be. God, where had that come from? That better not have been permanent... "If you have time," Zach muttered, watching her check the clock on her phone. His hands slipped in his pockets, thumbs latching on the edges. This kid was so far out of his league...Zach wasn't even sure what he sounded like but he was pretty sure it was an odd mixture of irritated, nervous, and reluctant. But basically he was irritated with himself, reluctant to be there, and holy hell he was asking a girl on a date! What in the world??

To the boy's utter surprise, the girl actually agreed to go to coffee with him. Okay. This...This was not accounted for. What the what was this?? Crap. This was probably the point where he should probably try to perk up so she didn't just walk away. Could he blame her? Not really. His own awkwardness was killing him from the inside. He could feel it radiating off of himself. Zachary extending his hand, shaking hers briefly with the same firm grip he would make a formal business agreement with. "I'm Zach." He even offered a small, smile. It was tight-lipped and he kind of looked like he was in minor pain. But it was fine...

"Uhhh, okay. Right. Do they have coffee here or....?" Zachary looked around, hands back in his pockets, not even sure what to do with himself. "Also, isn't it kind of hot for coffee?"
